The Theory program offers classes in Music Fundamentals for one semester, three semesters of Harmony and Keyboard Harmony and two semesters of Counterpoint. The Fundamentals course (Music 101) is intended for people with little or no music background and provides knowledge of basic musical practice. Harmony classes (Music 201, 202, 203) are designed to give the student understanding and skill in using chords according to harmonic practice from the 17th to 19th centuries. Parallel with the Harmony classes are Keyboard Harmony classes (Music 301, 302, 303) in which the student learns to apply the material learned in Harmony class to the keyboard. No previous piano experience is necessary, though it is helpful. Counterpoint (Music 221, 222), the art of combining melodic lines, is taught in two classes, one semester of late Renaissance practice as seen in Palestrina's music, and one semester of 18th century practice as seen in J. S. Bach's music. Musicianship courses (Music 211, 212, 213, 214) give training in practical skills i.e., the reading and performance of rhythm and pitch ideas separately and combined in melody. It also provides training in chord recognition. |
