Course Title:          English Fundamentals

Prerequisites:    

                                Satisfactory score on the English Placement test, completion of English 87 or English 20 with a C or better, or equivalent skills demonstrated by test scores or course completions of equivalent courses from another accredited college.  This course serves as a prerequisite for English 28.

Credit:    

                                This course does not meet the general education requirement for the Associate Degree; however, it is usable as elective credit toward the Associate Degree.  Students may repeat the course for a grade only once.

Course Catalog Description: 

                                English 21 is designed to improve the writing of sentences, paragraphs, and short essays.  It covers punctuation, spelling, and sentence structure and develops the ability to read analytically and think logically.  Other objectives are to assist students to write effectively, to introduce a variety of literary types and to encourage more careful reading at a level that challenges their present understanding.

Entry Skills:      

                                Students must have a basic understanding of standard written English as demonstrated by placement through the English assessment test.

Exit Skills:  

                                Students must be able to compose an in-class essay of C or higher level which consists of 350-500 words.  Students must also be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of thesis and topic sentences and/or use transitions and supporting point development correctly.  They must demonstrate proficiency in the following areas: spelling, punctuation, capitalization, verb usage, pronoun usage, subject verb agreement, and variations in sentence structure in order to avoid sentence fragments, fused sentences, comma splices, and mixed constructions.  The student must be able to recognize and identify the six major parts of speech along with clauses and prepositional phrases.  Students must be able to demonstrate in class postsecondary critical reading and thinking skills as well as oral and listening skills in English.

Course Objectives:

                                Designed to improve the students' appreciation for and ability to discuss and critically analyze, English 21 expects an improvement of the students' abilities to compose essays which are focused and coherent and an improvement of the students' abilities to edit their own written work.

Assignments:

                                The primary measure of student performance is the assessment of student writing  Instructors will evaluate essays and return them to students throughout the semester in a timely manner.  A two-hour final essay exam, written in class, is required.  Quizzes on grammar and informal journal entries can be used as well.

Methods of Instruction:

                                The primary mode of instruction is instructor-guided lecture and discussion.  Supplementary instruction may include individual conferences, criticism and group evaluation by students, audio-visual aids, referrals to writing labs and tutorial and study centers.
