ELECTRONICS 81 PROJECTS LABORATORY

Guidelines / Grading, Group B

Fall 2006

Group B:  Persons Making an EL 81 Project for the 2nd Time

After completing EL 81 for the first time a kit is no longer acceptable (a kit can only be built as a *first* EL 81 project, or possibly as a part of a more advanced endeavor).  For the second project you are asked to undertake a more advanced project.  This should consists something proven, one that has already been designed and for which a schematic and possibly parts list is available.  A very acceptable second project fulfilling these guidelines is an adjustable low voltage DC power supply and a handout to help with this is available if you are interested in this.  The suggested Textbook also presents several acceptable projects and includes schematics, parts lists, and even instruction for building.   Refer to Chapters 1-8 and 15, if you want to look at a project from this book..

The requirements to complete this course are:

Task

Grade Implication

1. A project Complexity Factor Applies

10% (1 letter grade)

2. Submit the contract proposal in a timely manner for this task, due March 2.

10% grade reduction (1 letter grade) if contract proposal submitted late.

3. Obtain and show the unbuilt parts to advisor on before the due date given for this task, due March 30.

10% grade reduction (1 letter grade) if parts shown late.

4. Build, calibrate, test, and demonstrate the unit on or before the given deadline, due before or on November 30.

10% grade reduction (1 letter grade) for demonstrations after this date.

5. The project must work as designed when demonstrated.

10% grade reduction (1 letter grade) if not working as designed

5.  Attendance at 5:45pm during project progress dates given for Group B in first day handout calendar

5% reduction (half letter grade) for each check in date missed.

6. Submit a two page typewritten report, summarizing your project building experience and include the hand draw schematic, a parts list, at least two photos (electronic images OK) of the unit under various stages of construction, and a 2-paragraph description of what is does and how it works.

15% grade reduction (1.5 letter grade) for missing report.  Report grade for neatness, being typewritten, and having appropriate content.

ELECTRONICS 81 PROJECTS LABORATORY

Guidelines / Grading, Group C

fall 2006

Group C:  Persons Making an EL 81 Project for the 3rd Time

Persons taking EL 81 for the third time are asked to go one step further, producing a notable project.  You are responsible to find a project in a magazine, books, or described on an internet site.  The suggested text book also has a number of acceptable projects described, such as those found on pages:  371, 377, 308, 393, 398, 412, 416, 430, 444, 449, 453, 458, 468, and 471.  Note that not every textbook project is acceptable for a  Group C undertaking, so discuss any projects you are thinking about with the instructor before obtaining parts!

7.  Attendance at 5:45pm during project progress dates given for Group C in first day handout calendar

5% reduction (half letter grade) for each check in date missed.

8. Submit a two page typewritten report, summarizing your project building experience and include the CAD draw schematic, a parts list, at least five photos (electronic images OK) of the unit under various stages of construction, a 2-paragraph description of what is does and how it works, and tables and graphs of test data verifying operation.

15% grade reduction (1.5 letter grade) for missing report.  Report grade for neatness, being typewritten, and having appropriate content.

Greater demands will be placed on producing a project that is well constructed and “looks good”.  a "visual impact" factor is included in the grade. (Is the project enclosure painted, for instance?)   The written report must include schematic drawings, parts lists, photos, test data, graphs of test data.  Photos of the project in various stages of development must be included.
