Soccer 2011
Season Review
The Lady Brahmas had
another great season at Pierce with a 13-3-4
record and were ranked top 10 in the Nation. Not
only did the Pierce Ladies continue their winning
tradition by winning 10+ games for the 11th
straight year, they have won an amazing 194
games in 11 years. Their overall record is an
incredible 194-30-34.
The Lady Brahmas were
ranked 6th in the Southern Region and
made it to the Southern California State Playoffs
for the 11th straight year clinching home
advantage in the first round of playoffs. They lost
to Cypress College 2-0, ending the dream of becoming
State Champions.
Pierce was led by
team MVP Stephanie Gilbert with 2 goals and 5
assists. She sacrificed moving from midfielder to
Defender when the team needed her the most. Gilbert
was also nominated to All-American
and received 1st team all Conference.
Due to her aggressive style of play Gilbert has
attracted several Division 1 and 2 programs.
The Pierce Ladies
were ranked top 10 in the Nation scoring 51 goals
and allowing 18 goals with 9 shutouts. A big part
of that success was Jennifer Venegas, Emily Streb,
Janelle Topete and Emily Ortiz. For her excellent
leadership as a sophomore captain, Venegas earned a
Coaches’ Award and 2nd Team All
Conference. Topete scored 1 goal and had 2 assists
as a freshman and earned Best Defender and 2nd
Team All Conference. Emily Streb controlled the
air like no other and earned Most Improved as a
freshman and Conference Honorable Mention. Emily
Ortiz as a freshman goalie and after coming back
from an elbow injury played 990 minutes allowing
only 11 goals and had 50 saves for the Brahmas. As
a freshman Captain Edith Dominguez had 6 goals and
13 assists earning her Freshman of the Year and 1st
Team All Conference. Also as a freshman Joandra
Ramirez surprised everyone by coming off the bench
to earn a starting spot in the middle and scored 6
goals and had 4 assists earning her a Coaches
‘Award and 2nd Team All Conference. Also
contributing to the goal list this year were
freshman Arely Blanco with 4 goals and 6 assists
earning her Conference Honorable Mention and
sophomore Sophie Forrester with 4 goals and 1 assist
as a midfielder. Also contributing to the stats
were Joyce Melara with 1 goal and 1 assist, June
Dean, Marlene Mejia and Robinette Ramirez, who also
had 1 goal for the Brahmas. Robinette Ramirez was
also a member of the El Salvador National Team
during the season, but was also injured most of the
season.
It is fair to say
that Jessica Gonzalez in the last 2 years at Pierce
has scored the Most Amazing Goals in school
history. You would have to see it to believe it.
She scored 13 goals and 9 assists earning her Best
Offensive Player of the Year and 1st Team
All Conference. She has attracted several Division
1 and 2 programs. Together everyone achieves more
and without the exceptional contribution of Alba
Torres, April Russell, Briana Chopin, Carla Campos,
Andrea Ulloa and Janelly De La Puente the season
would not have been possible.
Last but by no means
least, Daisy Alvarenga was one of the most skilled
players on the Lady Brahmas team, also referred to
as “Daisy’s Team”. Alvarenga scored 7 goals and 10
assists as a midfielder/Forward. Never complaining
about anything, worked harder than anyone on the
team and always put the team first. You cannot make
players like Alvarenga; sometimes they are just born
with the skill and passion for the game! Daisy
Alvarenga was not only one of the captains of the
team but the heart and soul, earning her 1st Team
All Conference and Receiving Brahma of the Year, a
Special Award not given every year. The Brahma
Award represents what a responsible, respectful,
hard working, humble, person of good character
should be. It is a big loss for the Brahmas as Daisy
moves forward to Div 1, 2 or a professional team who
have shown interest in her. Daisy Alvarenga was
simply “Brahma of the Year”
