| Nabil
Mardini :: Women's
Volleyball
A decorated and renowned coach with deep ties to and well-earned respect from the regional and national volleyball communities, Nabil Mardini reach new heights in 2010 after a fascinating journey spanning continents and countries over more than twenty years.
Nabil moved into the coaching ranks shortly after the completion of his playing days – which included a professional career with Club Relevement Social Knat and a stint with the Lebanese Junior National Team, plus an award-winning run at Santa Monica College in 1996, when he was voted the school’s Male Athlete of the Year” – and swiftly made a mark for himself, earning a Gold Medal at the Junior Olympics as a coach with the Santa Monica Beach Club boys program in 1997. He coached for both the boys and girls of SMBC until the year 2000, when he took on additional responsibilities as Director of both SMBC Boys and Girls, and was also named the head coach for the Women’s volleyball team at Pierce College. To top all this off, he also earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1997 from the University of California, Los Angeles.
Nabil is in eleventh season as the head coach at Pierce College for the Women’s Volleyball Program. In his first two seasons, he turned the program around by taking the Brahmas from last place in the Western State Conference to its first conference title (2001) since 1980. In 2004 and 2005, he led his program to its first Elite Eight Tournament appearances in the school’s history and finished the season ranked fifth in the State of California in 2005. In 2006, he coached his team to an impressive record of 27-5, winning the Western State Conference for the sixth straight year and finishing as the state’s runner-up. In 2008, his squad finished the season ever with a record of 32 wins to only two losses on its way to winning the WSC conference for the eighth year in a row and were ranked the number one team in the state for nine consecutive weeks. Prior to 2010, he had collected an impressive record of 217 wins to 50 losses and was named the Western State Conference (South) Coach of the Year in 2002, 2004, 2006, 2007, and 2008.
It was the 2010 Pierce season, however, that took the Lady Brahmas to its greatest and most glorious heights under Nabil. Led by a talented group of sophomores – which included several former SMBC players – the Pierce Women’s Volleyball Team, after winning yet another Conference Title, captured the first California State Championship in school history, cementing their legacy as one of the most successful teams ever, in any sport, for Pierce College. Nabil, too, was honored for their tremendous accomplishments, winning 2010 awards as the All-Southern California Coach of the Year, AVCA 2010 Two-Year College Southwest Region Coach of the Year, and AVCA 2010 Two Year College National Coach of the Year, receiving the last at a ceremony held annually in Kansas City before an audience of his peers.
Nabil is also credited as the driving force behind the recent rise of SMBC as a regional and national club volleyball powerhouse. Under his leadership more than eighty SMBC athletes have gone on to play collegiate volleyball, the vast majority on scholarship of some kind. During his tenure, he has revolutionized the SMBC training systems and is responsible for the institution of swing blocking and quick-tempo offensive systems at top age levels.
As coach of SMBC's top 18 and under team, he has guided the squad to four Top Ten finishes at the Volleyball Festival in Reno in five years. In 2006, the SMBC 18-1's finished fourth in the ultra-competitive and nationally regarded powerhouse SCVA 18's Overall Standings (out of 173 teams), by far the best finish of any area club that season. His gutsy 2007 squad knocked-off several high seeds en route to a 10th place finish at the Festival. In the past four years, his SMBC 18-1’s finished 4th at the Volleyball Festival in Reno in 2008 and 3rd in Phoenix in 2009, and most recently 3rd at the 2010 Festival.

Judi
Terhar ::
Women's
Swimming
Judi Terhar began her
swimming career in Seattle Washington in 1966 on a swim
team featuring two Olympians. Her coaches attention to
detail and swimmers model of excellence had a profound
impact on her. After moving to California she was again
fortunate to have a coach who excelled, and he guided
her to a top ten time in the United States in the 200
fly. In High School she was an All American in the 100
fly and 200 IM, qualifying third for each race in the
CIF Finals. She was offered a full scholarship to CSUN
where she swam for Peter Accardy.
Judi set four school records at CSUN as a freshman and
was a four time All American in the 100 fly, 200 fly,
200 IM, and 400 IM. Some of her records lasted for over
20 years. She was awarded the Most Valuable Swimmer in
1977, and the Most Inspirational Swimmer in 1978, as
surgery ended her swimming career that year. Although it
was difficult to be unable to compete, Judi went back to
her high school in 1978 to coach the team she started in
1974. The team had grown from a few swimmers to over 40.
Having been impacted by so many coaches who helped her
to be successful, it became her desire to do the same.
In 1979 Judi began lifeguarding at Pierce College and
helping Steve Schofield with the Master's Swim Program.
In 1984 she was a chaperon for the college team on a
three week trip to Australia where she also competed.
The following year she became the Women's Head Swim
Coach at Pierce College. Many of the women she coached
set school records and qualified for the State
Championships. She coached until 1990 and left to begin
working as a Therapist at Simi Valley Hospital in Acute
Rehabilitation.
In 2000, Judi returned to CSUN to get a Master's Degree
in Counseling and going back to school afforded the
opportunity to coach at the High School, Club, and
Master's level again. After graduating from CSUN with
her Master's Degree, Fred Shaw invited her to coach as
his assistant at Pierce College where she has coached
for the past 7 years. Judi is looking forward to being
the Pierce College Women's Head Swim Coach this year of
2012.
