SPORTS FLASH

In 2008 the Women’s Volleyball Team finished with a record of 32 wins to only two losses on its way to winning the WSC conference for the eighth year in a row. Furthermore, the team was ranked the number one team in the state for nine consecutive weeks before losing a heartbreaker in the second round of playoffs that denied the Brahmas a trip to the Elite Eight and ended their 61-game winning streak at home that dated back since October 11th of 2002.

It is also worth noting that the team's three First-Team-All-Conference players, Janet Alvarado, Terry Soltani, and Vanessa Murray, are continuing their collegiate careers at CSUN, UCLA, and Kansas State University respectively.

The team returns only three sophomores and welcomes 10 incoming freshmen: Sofia Granato (Cleveland HS), Julianna Hicks (Fairfax HS), Alexa Micek (Oak Park HS), Theo Papadopoulos (Alemany HS), Karly Siverts (Culver City HS), Allyson Benne (Jon Burroughs HS), Megan McKee (Golden Valley HS), Amy Edberg (El Camino HS), Danielle Shoemaker (Alemany HS), and Reanna Hill (Chatsworth HS).

This 2009 season, the Brahmas are hit with the injury bug as four players are out with injuries including the 2008 Player of the Year, Sarah Martin. Last week, the Brahmas got some sort of relief as freshman opposite and middle, Reanna Hill, got cleared to practice after pulling a muscle on her shin that kept her off the court since the beginning of September.

Friday’s match against No.16 College of the Canyons (Cougars) was Pierce’s conference home opener in the newly renovated North Gym. The South Gym is currently being renovated and all home games will be held in the North Gym.

Currently, the team is (4-10, 0-1); Its first losing record prior to starting conference matches since 1999 and looking to defend its conference championships for the eighth year in a row. Freshman setter, Gracie Shedd is currently ranked third in conference in the number of assists (410) and aces (21).  Alexa Micek is ranked second in the number of digs with 252 total and sophomore middle blocker, Natasha Wilroy, is ranked third in the number of blocks with 31 total.

Western State Conference Champions

A Little Bit of History

The Women's Volleyball Program has come a long way since the head coach of the BRAHMAS, Nabil Mardini, took over the helm. In 2001, his second season as the head coach, he took his team to a new level of competitiveness by going from LAST PLACE in the conference the previous season to an amazing FIRST PLACE finish in the Western State Conference and the program never looked back….

In 2002, his squad went undefeated (10-0) and won the conference for the SECOND year in a row and finished with a record of 15-3. This was the best finish in Pierce College history since 1980.

In 2003, the program made history again by going 16-4 overall and 9-1 in the conference and clinched the Western State Conference Championship for the THIRD straight year. They finished the season ranked 8th in the State of California.

In 2004, the program reached another milestone by going 18-4 overall and 9-1 in the conference and clinched the Western State Conference Championship for the FOURTH straight year. The team made it to the Elite Eight Tournament for the FIRST TIME in the program history. The team finished the season ranked 5th in the State of California. Once again, this is the best finish in Pierce College history.

In 2005, the Women's Volleyball Team finished with a record of 23-4. The team was the only team from the South to make it to the Elite Eight for the second year in a row. The team won the Western State Conference for the FIFTH straight year and finished ranked FOURTH in the State of California.

In 2006, THE BRAHMAS FINISHED THE YEAR WITH AN IMPRESSIVE RECORD OF 27-5 (9-1 IN CONFERENCE). The Brahmas were the only team from the South to make it to the Elite Eight for the 3rd year in a row. They also won the Western State Conference for the SIXTH straight year and finished ranked SECOND in the State of California. The 2006 squad had the MOST WINS of any team in the State of California.

This past 2007 season, the team finished with a record of (26-4, 13-0 in conference) and was ranked 6th in the state. Once again, the program won its SEVENTH CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP IN A ROW.

Most recently, the 2008 squad finished its best season ever with 32 wins to only two losses on its way to winning the WSC conference for the eighth year in a row and were ranked the number one team in the state for nine consecutive weeks before losing a heartbreaker in the second round of playoffs that denied the Brahmas a trip to the Elite Eight.

In the past four years, fifteen of our nineteen graduating seniors received scholarships to play at different universities such as University of California Irvine, Concordia, Northern Arizona, Cal. State LA, UC San Diego, Washington State, Cal Poly Pomona, Fresno State and most recently Kansas State, University of Idaho, Florida State, San Jose State, Truman State, Cal State Monterey Bay, University of Kansas, New Mexico University and University of San Francisco.

More importantly, in the past nine years the team holds a record of 176 wins to 33 losses. That is more than 82% winning percentage.
