Women's
Soccer 2008 Season
Review
The Lady Brahmas had another
great season at Pierce with a 19-4-3 record.
Not only did the Pierce ladies continue their
winning tradition by winning 10+ games for the 8th
straight year; they have won an amazing
143 games
in eight years. Their overall record is an
incredible
143-23-26.
The Lady Brahmas
were ranked 9th in the South Region and
made it to the Southern California State Playoffs
for the 8th straight year where they
faced their Southern Region rival Moorpark in the
first round. After taking care of Moorpark in
penalty kicks with a win of 3-1, the Brahmas then
faced last year’s National Champion #1 seeded
Cerritos in the second round. The dream for a State
Championship ended with a score of 3-0 in favor of
Cerritos in the second round of playoffs.
Pierce was led by
2008 Western State All-Conference first team and
captain, Amanda Bernal who despite coming back from
a serious knee injury managed to score 8 goals and
had 10 assists. Amanda’s determination not to go out
without a fight as well as her great play elevated
her to becoming an All American Candidate.
Betty Ramirez was
one of the shortest players on the field, but has
one of the biggest hearts. After making the
decision to forgo her senior year in high school to
join the mighty Brahmas as the starting keeper,
Betty did not disappoint. As a freshman, she played
2210 min, the most in the State. She was #12
statewide with an incredible 18 shut outs and an
amazing goal against average of 0.7248 making her an
All American Candidate and team MVP. Betty was also
selected to the 2008 Western State All-Conference 1st
team.
The Pierce ladies
were #8 statewide with 65 goals as a team and 15 of
them were scored by freshman Stephanie Cubias.
Cubias also had 8 assists and as a freshman also
earned Western State All-Conference first team as
well as team MVP.
Two other players
were also selected to All Conference 1st
team, freshman and Captain Gabby Gavotto and
sophomore Yasmine Yahoum. Gabby did a great job in
the back as the last line of defense and contributed
to the 18 shut outs. For her solid leadership and
strong defense, Gavotto earned Team Best Defender
Award. Despite missing almost a month due to
illness and injury, Yasmine was a dangerous force
going forward scoring 12 goals and 7 assists; second
in scoring for the team. For her great play,
Yasmine received team Best Offensive award. Captain
Rocio Abundez, Casey Schwartz, Rachel Kove and
Emelie Martinez all earned All- Conference 2nd
team. Rocio “Roo, Roo” had 3 goals and 3 assists,
making her a recipient of the Team Coaches’ award
alongside (street smart soccer) Emelie Martinez, who
started off as a forward and was moved back to
defense early in the season. Casey Schwartz with
her “Karate” clearances and always doing what was
best for the team earned team Most Improved.
All-Conference Honorable Mention went to Gina
Piazza, who also had 7 goals and 4 assists and
Captain Dilhani Perera who had 5 goals and 1
assist. Dilhani’s awesome speed earned her Pierce
College Most Improved player. A big part of the
Brahmas being able to achieve 65 goals came from
forward Emani Steward who had 4 goals and Stephanie
Weaver with 1 goal and 1 assist. Both exhibited
great speed and determination to score at all cost.
Denise Kochheim, who always put the team first
moving from defense to forward had 2 goals and 7
assists. Together everyone achieved more and without
the exceptional contribution of Julie Tello, Chris
Ramos, Kelsey Morquecho, Lisette Alfe, Jamie Noland
and Citlaly Reyes the season could not have been
possible.
